Time: 1:30pm - 4:00pm (please note the time change)

Location:At the home of Steve Glenn ’87. Directions will be provided to ticket purchasers.

Cost: $10/Members; $15/NonMembers

Description: Join fellow Brown alumni and friends in Southern California for a special program with Physics Professor Brad Marston entitled “The Quantum Mechanics of Global Warming.” Quantum mechanics plays a crucial, albeit often overlooked, role in determining the Earth’s climate. Feynman’s famous two-slit interference experiment gives us the key to understanding climate. I use this understanding to present a simple physical picture of what will happen to the Earth as the concentrations of greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide continue to increase.

Professor Marston joined the Brown Physics Department in 1991. A graduate of Caltech, he received his Ph.D. from Princeton University in 1989. He has done postdoctoral work at Cornell University and was a visiting scientist at the Institute for Theoretical Physics at UC Santa Barbara. Prof. Marston is an Alfred P. Sloan Fellow and a recipient of a National Young Investigator Award from the National Science Foundation.

Steve Glenn’s prefabricated LivingHome was the first home to be certified LEED Platinum and the only home to win the AIA’s top sustainability award in 2007.

Date: Sunday, June 29th, 2008

Time: 2:00pm

Location: Disney Hall

Description: Join fellow Alums as the Cal Phil opens its summer season at the architecturally and acoustically renowned Disney Hall with “America the Beautiful” on Sunday, June 29th.

Featured artists include pianist Norman Krieger – applauded by the New York Times for his “lovely, velvety touch” – in a performance of Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue – and James Tormé, son of legendary performer, Mel Tormé, presenting his father’s rarely performed but critically acclaimed California Suite for singer, jazz trio and orchestra.

‘Stops’ on Cal Phil’s “America the Beautiful” tour include: George Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue, with world renowned pianist Norman Krieger; Grand Canyon Suite by Ferde Grofe; excerpts from the Tony and Academy Award winning musical Chicago by John Kander and Fred Ebb, as well as a swinging rendition of the team’s New York, New York (sorry, Liza not included); Aaron Copland’s Appalachian Spring; and California Suite by Mel Tormé, featuring the renowned jazz vocalist’s son, James Tormé. “My father wrote California Suite, in part, as an answer to Manhattan Tower, Gordon Jenkins’ work celebrating the East Coast,” says James Tormé. “It’s a truly masterful musical tribute to the great Golden State as it was then, with orange groves and bean fields as far as the eyes could see. And no traffic…” Gee, imagine that—no traffic!

This a great family friendly event to celebrate the 4th of July and to experience outstanding music celebrating our nation’s musical heritage.

Prices: $30 for BCSC members and their guests; $35 for non-members and their guests.

Directions: For visitors to René and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall and Samueli Theater, we recommend parking in the Plaza Tower Parking Structure, which is across Park Center Drive from the Westin South Coast Plaza and directly behind the concert hall and South Coast Repertory.

Description: This will be a “cabaret style” performance in a smaller theater, with tables that seat 4 and beverage service. Order tickets directly from the box office and then RSVP to lemlein@aol.com to let us know you are coming. An informal, no host, desserts and drinks gathering with James is planned at Leatherbys on site at OCPAC after the performance.

James Naughton is the winner of not one but two Tony Awards: for City of Angels in 1990 and Chicago in 1997. Don'’t expect too many Broadway tunes from this suave crooner, though: Away from the theatrical stage, Naughton prefers to focus on other styles, ranging from pop standards to jazz. Of late, he’’s been delving into songs made famous by a wide ranging roster of artists, among them Frank Sinatra, Randy Newman, Billy Eckstine, Duke Ellington, and Tom Waits. But the stage experience shines through: His numbers become miniature dramas, artistic monologues sung with old style “cool”.

Cost: Regular box office ticket prices of $62, plus fees and parking. Leatherbys will be cash bar & desserts.

To Purchase: Call the OPAC Box Office at 714-556-2787 or order online at http://www.ocpac.org/. Then RSVP to Carol Lemlein, Co-Chair of the Women’s Committee to let us know you are coming, lemlein@aol.com.
