Sunday, May 20, 2012 We’ll meet at 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, May 20, 2012 at the Pinot Grill on the Plaza immediately adjacent to the Ahmanson Theater. There, we’ll enjoy a delicious catered reception as we mingle, catch up with old friends, make new friends, and of course talk excitedly about the show before we take in the 6:30 p.m. production. Follies, the critically acclaimed Broadway musical, is coming straight from Broadway to the Ahmanson in one of the most exciting special engagements ever to come to the Los Angeles theater scene. Follies is a moving, compelling, and entertaining story of two couples who reunite on the eve of the demotion of the theater where they had previously performed. As they have the opportunity to view their formerly bustling entertainment venue for the final time, they take an insightful, though provoking look at an era gone by and about how their experiences during that era continue to affect them today. Follies is an amazing view into American culture during the Vaudeville era and the time between the two World Wars.
Best of all, this special engagement comes straight from Broadway with very few changes from the Broadway cast. The show features the well-known songs “Broadway Baby,” “I’m Still Here,” “Too Many Mornings,” “Could I Leave You?” and “Losing My Mind,” to round out a show that will leave you clamoring for more. Price: Due to the efforts of the Brown Club, the Brown Club was able to obtain tickets at a substantial group discount. Tickets for both the catered reception and the spectacular Broadway musical are only $__ (members) and $__ (non-members). Questions: Lenny Kirschen ’99 lkirschen@gmail.com. You can also post in the forum. You may need to register first.

Saturday, May 5th, 2012 11:00 am to 2:30 pm Orange County Museum of Art
850 San Clemente Drive
Newport Beach, California 92660
949-759-1122
Directions: According to the website, please do not refer to Mapquest, Yahoo, or Google maps for information on the location of the Orange County Art Museum! From the 405 North, exit Jamboree Road and go West (towards the Ocean). Continue on Jamboree Road and turn left onto Santa Barbara Drive, then turn left on San Clemente Drive. Take an immediate left into the parking lot. From the 405 South, connect to the 73 South and exit Jamboree Road. Turn right on Jamboree Road. Continue on Jamboree Road and turn left onto Santa Barbara Drive, then turn left on San Clemente Drive. Take an immediate left into the parking lot. A map can be found on the museum website: www.ocma.net. We invite you to join us at the Orange County Museum of Art for a docent-led tour of Richard Diebenkorn: The Ocean Park Series.Recognized as a leading West Coast Abstract Expressionist in the 1950s, Diebenkorn turned his attention to figurative painting in 1955 and achieved equal success in this alternate style. In 1967 he returned to abstraction, and during the next twenty years would forge one of the most compelling and masterful bodies of work of the 20th century: the Ocean Park series.
This is the first major museum exhibition to explore these celebrated works, created from 1967 to 1988. The exhibition captures Diebenkorn’s practice of working simultaneously in diverse media — including paintings, prints, drawings, and collages — and provides you with an opportunity to explore the complexity of Diebenkorn’s artistic and aesthetic concerns.
Lunch will be in the Mariposa restaurant on the 3rd floor of Nieman Marcus in nearby Fashion Island. There will be a brief business meeting during lunch to determine the donations to be made to Brown for 2012. You may have wondered exactly what we do with the funds we collect as dues and other donations. Over the years we have donated to the Pembroke Center, to Women’s Sports, and to campus theater organizations, currently Rites and Reason.
More about our donations below. The Linda Pei Undergraduate Research Grant at the Pembroke Center
Several years ago the group asked if we could designate our donations to the Pembroke Center to undergraduate research. Carol Lemlein, a member of the Pembroke Associates Council, proposed that we help fund an undergraduate research grant named for her classmate Linda Pei, ’67.
The Linda Pei Undergraduate Research Grant supports an undergraduate research project related to issues of women’s financial empowerment such as: gender equality in the workplace; micro-lending to women in developing nations; and, the relationship between educational attainment and financial independence for women.
The $1000 grant honors the life of Linda Pei ’67 (1944-2007). Linda was born in China and grew up in Tokyo. When she was 16 her parents, then living in Vietnam, sent her to the United States for schooling. She graduated from Brown with a B.A. in chemistry, earned a masters degree in teaching from Wesleyan University and an MBA in Finance from Stanford University. In 1993 she founded the Women’s Equity Mutual Fund in 1993 to advance the social and economic status of women in the workplace by bringing to bear the collective power of individual and institutional investors. She also founded a program to integrate entrepreneurial learning and microfinance in a small community in China.
Linda Pei Undergraduate Research Grant Recipients:
2008/2009 Debbie Lehmann, Economics
Examining the role of Argentina’s Pro Mujer microfinance programs on women’s
empowerment and on the dynamics of their marital relationships
2009/2010 Julie Siwicki, Development Studies; Economics
“Credit, Investments, and Women: The roles of Informal Finance and Micro-finance in Urban Mali”
2010/2011 Christine Zaleski, Environmental Studies
“How has community based management impacted human and ecosystem welfare in two oyster restoration projects?: Lessons from conservation strategies in Rhode Island and the Gambia”
2011/2012 Nicole Friedman, English Literature
Female health disparities across the United States.
See Nicole’s blog at www.agingacrossthestates.wordpress.com
In some past years we have been able to donate as much as $1000 to the Pembroke Center alone. In 2011 we donated $850: $550 to the Pembroke Center;
$150 split between Women’s Swimming and the Sailing Team; $150 to Rites and Reason.
As this announcement goes to press, we have just over $500 in our account. Without a substantial number of additional renewals and donations this month, we will have to greatly reduce our donations.
Please join or renew your membership today!
Membership is $25. Alums 1962 or earlier (50 years!!) may choose to pay $15, and recent grads after 2009 (2 years or less) join free. Most of our dues go to Brown to support women-related entities, including an annual undergraduate research grant in the Pembroke Center and support for women’s sports.
Women of Brown So Cal events are open to all alums, male and female, regardless of “membership”. However, we hope you would choose to join us! You may pay at our event or mail a check payable to “Women of Brown So Cal” to: Carol Lemlein, 2311 Pearl Street, Santa Monica, CA 90405. Museum admission is $12 for Adults, $10 for Students w/ID and Seniors 65 and older. Please plan to pay your own admission and meet us a few minutes early for the 11 AM docent tour.
Mariposa’s lunch menu features soups and other starters $6-15 and sandwiches and salads starting at $15.
Please RSVP by Thursday, May 3 to Linda Papermaster, linda@oksi.com or 310-372-3986 You can post in the forum. You may need to register first.

Sunday, March 11, 2012 We’ll meet at Flemings Stake House directly across the street from the Staples Center in the new LA Live shopping area at 4:00 p.m. At 6:00 p.m., we’ll walk across the street to the Staples Center. Tip-off is 6:30 p.m. Staples Center Just before the start of the NBA season, the Los Angeles Clippers stunned everyone with their acquisition of all-star forward Chris Paul. Now, last year’s rookie of the year and sensational dunker Blake Griffin and Chris Paul have taken their game and the Clippers franchise to a new level, as the Clippers sit atop the NBA’s Pacific Division in position to land a top playoff seed with an opportunity to go deep into the playoffs.
Don’t miss this opportunity to experience this new era in Los Angeles sports for yourself with a group of Brown alumni as we watch the Clippers take on the Golden State Warriors on March 11, 2012. Last year’s BCSC NBA event sold out almost immediately, and this one will do the same. As tickets are limited, be sure to get yours now.
On game day, we’ll meet at Flemings Stake House directly across the street from the Staples Center in the new LA Live shopping area at 4:00 p.m. At Flemings, we’ll take advantage of Happy Hour pricing to enjoy some food from a truly first rate steakhouse at an unbeatable price before the game as we get to know our fellow Brown Alumni and talk excitedly about how the Clippers are taking the NBA by storm and ushering in a new era of professional basketball in Los Angeles. At 6:00 p.m., we’ll walk across the street to the Staples Center to see the Clippers and Warriors do battle at a time when every game matters for playoff position. Tip-off is at 6:30 p.m.
Tickets are only $33.00 for members and $41.00 for non-members, so get yours before they sell out. Please note that the event has the following policy regarding guests:Each Brown graduate attending may bring one non family member guest. There is no limit to family member guests (including spouses). A Brown graduate may bring a spouse and two children. However, Brown graduates are limited to one non-Brown alumni friend. This policy is necessary due to the limited number of tickets available.
