The music this week is MONK'estra! Led by conductor/arranger John Beasley, the 15-piece modern jazz band MONK'estra captures the spirit of Thelonious Monk's unique quirkiness. Offbeat accents and punchy dissonances can be found in MONK'estra's fresh arrangements of Monk's and other classic and original compositions. Beasley's contemporary twist incorporates Afro-Cuban rhythms, modern jazz, hip hop, big-band instrumentation, and stunningly atmospheric ensemble textures, all powerfully driven by a propulsive rhythm section.
