Lunch in Beverly Hills And An Afternoon with Julia ChildDate:Saturday, October 17, 2009Time:11:30am – 2:30pmLocation:Nate 'n Al Deli (11:30am) 414 North Beverly Drive, Beverly Hills 90210 [map]; Paley Center for Media (1:15pm) 465 North Beverly Drive, Beverly Hills, 90210 [map]Description:Julia Child (1912 - 2004) brought haute cuisine to Americans - and forever changed the way we think about food - through some 40 years of cooking shows and a shelf-full of best-selling cookbooks. Have you seen the film "Julia and Julie" yet? We have, and it has inspired us to celebrate Julia Child with a mini festival of our own to include some of Julia's best and often most hilarious TV broadcasts.First, we will meet 11:30 for lunch at Nate 'n Al Deli which is ½ block south of the Paley Center. This landmark Beverly Hills eatery was opened by Al Mendelson in 1945. For 30 years customers paid their checks to Tessie, Al's wife, who operated the cash register. Julia herself surely noshed here. Secondly, we will stroll back north along Beverly to the beautiful and high tech Paley Center, designed by Richard Meier, for a private screening of clips which they have assembled on Julia's illustrious cooking show career including appearances with some of her many guest chefs. Included are excerpts from Julia’s interview at the Paley in 2000 (then called the Museum of Television & Radio) and one of her earliest programs - in which she prepares chicken with vegetables and risotto - for The French Chef, which debuted in 1963 on WGBH in Boston. We have been intending to have the Women visit the wonderful Paley Center for some time now. The Center, with locations in NYC and Beverly Hills, houses an incomparable collection of vintage and current television and radio programs and conducts a huge ongoing series of lively special programs honoring past and current giants of the industry. More information on the Paley Center and it's fine archives and special programs at www.paleycenter.org. Notes:Parking underneath the Paley Center which opens at 11:30am is free. You can park there and walk the half block south to Nate 'n Al. If you arrive earlier than 11:30, there is also free public parking for the first two hours under the CVS Pharmacy building on the west side of Beverly, with a nominal fee thereafter.RSVP:This event is completed. |
